As a Medical Laboratory Specialist in the 4T0X1 career field, you will play a vital role in supporting patient care and medical diagnostics within the United States Air Force. Your responsibilities will include performing a wide range of laboratory tests, analyzing specimens, and providing accurate and timely results to healthcare providers. This position requires a strong background in laboratory techniques, attention to detail, and a commitment to maintaining high-quality standards in diagnostic testing.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Specimen Collection and Processing: Collect, label, and prepare patient specimens for laboratory analysis. Follow established protocols for specimen handling, storage, and transportation to ensure sample integrity. Prepare reagents, solutions, and equipment necessary for laboratory testing. Adhere to safety procedures and infection control guidelines.
2. Laboratory Testing and Analysis: Perform a variety of laboratory tests, including hematology, clinical chemistry, microbiology, immunology, and molecular diagnostics. Operate and maintain laboratory instruments, analyzers, and equipment. Conduct quality control procedures to verify accuracy and precision of test results. Analyze test data, interpret findings, and generate accurate reports for healthcare providers.
3. Quality Assurance and Compliance: Maintain high standards of quality assurance and quality control within the laboratory. Follow standardized procedures and protocols to ensure accurate and reliable test results. Participate in proficiency testing programs and adhere to regulatory and accreditation requirements. Document and report any deviations or errors in test results.
4. Equipment Maintenance and Troubleshooting: Perform routine maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment to ensure accurate and reliable performance. Troubleshoot equipment malfunctions and implement appropriate corrective actions. Coordinate with biomedical equipment personnel for more complex repairs or instrument replacements.
5. Collaboration and Communication: Work collaboratively with healthcare providers, medical staff, and other laboratory professionals to ensure effective patient care and timely reporting of results. Communicate test results, interpret findings, and provide consultation to healthcare providers when necessary. Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings and contribute to the overall patient management and treatment plans.
Qualifications:
- U.S. citizenship and eligibility for a Secret security clearance.
- Successful completion of Basic Military Training and the Medical Laboratory Apprentice Course.
- Strong knowledge of laboratory techniques, procedures, and equipment used in clinical diagnostic testing.
- Proficiency in performing a variety of laboratory tests, including hematology, clinical chemistry, microbiology, immunology, and molecular diagnostics.
- Familiarity with laboratory safety protocols and infection control practices.
- Attention to detail and ability to follow standardized procedures and protocols.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills for result interpretation and troubleshooting.
- Knowledge of quality assurance and quality control principles in laboratory testing.
- Effective communication skills to interact with healthcare providers and medical staff.
- Basic computer skills for data entry and laboratory information system usage.
